The Australian selection chief the selector has stated that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's Ashes series.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about the prospects of taking part.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations at play, not just his injury, but further aspects," he commented.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a key capacity. Hopefully it's the first Test. If not, we'll adjust."

The captain missed the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India last month after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the series.

He mentioned that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the opening match as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches in any case. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
