The Former President's Framework of Punishment and Favor

The ex-president's insatiable appetite for revenge has rapidly transformed into a structured system. Over the twelve months, the chief executive's fury and whims have adopted the form of government actions similar to reminiscent to past authoritarian regimes. Government officials who do not cooperate are immediately fired and replaced by loyalists. Political officials who challenge him face prosecution, court proceedings and penalties. Adversaries have been designated under executive memoranda as “anti-American”, “against faith communities” and “against free markets”, and warned with legal action as “extremists”.

Federal Agencies Transformed

Each case involving legal action of political opponents and immunity for his allies exhibits its own unique qualities. Yet, despite their individual nature, they exemplify expressions of what has arisen as a calculated approach. Such incidents are far from isolated. Trump's purge of Department of Justice prosecutors and FBI officials, alongside his installation of supporters in senior positions, began quickly, soon took on a pattern, and has now been formed into a regime. The justice department and the FBI have been restructured into political organizations under Trump's explicit command to implement his directives. Unfairness has been turned into normal. This is the apparatus of revenge.

Management is focused with targeting the chief's perceived enemies than they are with protecting our public welfare.

Inside the Apparatus

The beginnings of this framework has been revealed in the legal complaint of several former senior FBI officials lodged in September in the federal court in Washington against agency head a senior appointee and justice department head Pam Bondi for illegal termination in “a campaign of retribution against Plaintiffs for what the accused judged to be a inability to exhibit sufficient devotion”. In the complaint that Brian Driscoll, the previous interim leader, details a exchange in which the director “openly confessed the illegality of his behavior”.

He had sought to protect agency personnel from being terminated, the complaint claims. He told him that “they” – understood by the official to be the executive branch and federal prosecutors – had instructed him to remove all those who they considered as having participated in a legal probe against him. The document adds: “He explained that he had to terminate the people his superiors told him to fire, because his ability to retain his own position depended on the removal of the officials who were involved in matters involving the leader. Patel explained that there was no way he or him could do to halt these or any other dismissals, because ‘the FBI attempted to incarcerate the chief in prison and he hasn't forgotten it.’” When the official informed him he was disregarding the bureau's own internal rules, the director supposedly said “he knew that and he realized the character of the swift terminations were almost certainly improper”.

Broad Consequences

Since his alleged confession to the official, the DoJ and the Federal Bureau have been weakened and reorganized for the administration's retribution system. Multiple of the bureau's senior executives were fired or forced out in the early weeks of the presidency. About 4,500 lawyers at DoJ have agreed to a “deferred resignation program”. At least several federal prosecutors, including those in the New York office, stepped down in objection over what they regarded as partisan influence in dropping the legal action against the city leader, the mayor, in exchange for his collaboration with Trump's Immigration and Customs Enforcement roundups of foreign nationals. The public integrity section of DoJ, which manages corruption cases, has been reduced to minimal staff. The equality section has been devastated: seventy percent of its staff has left. One-third of top officials at the department have resigned. The section upholding conservation statutes has experienced the exit of half its management.

Favors and Sanctions

In the Adams case, the acting US attorney for the federal division, she, stepped down in protest against what she described as the “quid pro quo”. A key figure, Trump's “immigration leader,” appeared as the enforcer with the mayor on Fox News to announce: “Unless he complies, I'll reappear in New York City.”. And, another figure, formerly the senior DoJ official and a ex-lawyer, who negotiated the deal, was granted an court role, a potential stepping stone to the highest court.

His exemption for wrongdoings committed while in power, awarded by the unprecedented ruling of the conservative on the supreme court, thus blocking his legal action over the Capitol riot and preserving his electoral prospects for the presidential race, is the foundation stone on which he depends to defend his loyalists. With such immunity, he has been freed to permit corruption. The consequence of the judicial ruling saturates his government and the Republican Party down to its bones. The court matter has metastasized. In the words of a past leader's White House counsel he remarked about the Watergate
